the brain and body is a master chemical factory, creating some of the most intricate and intoxicating substances known to man. the brain and body work together to produce these chemicals in a complex and coordinated way. when the body is healthy, the brain and body are able to produce the right balance of chemicals to keep us healthy and functioning well. however, when the body is stressed or unhealthy, the production of chemicals can be disrupted, leading to problems with physical and mental health.

FOCUS : endogenous

endogenous means “originating within the body.” so, endogenous chemicals are those that are produced by the body itself, as opposed to being introduced from outside the body.

there are many different types of endogenous chemicals, including:

  • hormones: chemicals that are produced by glands and released into the bloodstream, where they travel to other parts of the body to regulate various functions.
  • neurotransmitters: chemicals that are produced by neurons and released into the synaptic cleft, where they bind to receptors on other neurons to transmit signals.
  • endorphins: natural pain relievers that are produced by the brain and spinal cord.
  • DMT: a psychedelic compound that is produced by the pineal gland.

breathwork and ice baths are two tools that can be used to influence the production of endogenous chemicals. holotropic breathwork and wim hof method breathing paired with cold exposure therapy has been shown to have a number of benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving mood, and boosting the immune system.

in addition to breathwork and ice baths, there are other things you can do to influence the production of endogenous chemicals. these include:

  • getting enough sleep
  • eating a healthy diet
  • exercising regularly
  • practicing mindfulness
